Step 1

Begin by preparing the wall for tile. See this guide based on your wall’s surface type.

Step 2

Mix your tile adhesive and spread it on a small section of the wall with a trowel. It’s important to work in small sections because thinset and other adhesives dry quickly. Next, comb over it with a notched trowel.

Step 3

Press the first piece of tile onto the wall with a little twist. Push against it with a rubber float to set it in the adhesive. Working in small sections, repeat step 2 with additional tiles, using spacers to ensure even spacing.

Step 4

If you need to make a cut, mark the tile. For larger tile cuts, use a tile cutter. For smaller tile cuts, use nippers.

Step 5

Let the adhesive dry for 24 hours then mix the grout. Use un-sanded grout for gaps measuring less than 1/8 inch and sanded grout for gaps measuring more than 1/8 inch.

Step 6

Apply grout diagonally across tiles using a rubber float to press it into the joints. Wait 10 minutes, then wipe away excess grout with a sponge using a diagonal motion. Remember to rinse your sponge often. A slight haze may form but will clean away by applying haze remover.

Step 7

Allow grout to dry then apply grout sealer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 8

Fill the expansion gaps with caulk or silicone sealant.
