When I saw this white house in Asheville, North Carolina, it stopped me in my tracks. Gorgeous! Platt Architects say the clients asked for a rambling family home with classic Southern style that was “simple and old fashioned, right down to the ‘trick-or-treater’ front porch.”

It was featured in Carolina Home + Garden magazine, which explained that it incorporates elements of a classic, Southern small-town home, “but also features a carefully concealed solar power array, radiant heat and a strategic layout that maximizes ambient light.”

Homeowners Tom and Toni enlisted architects Al and Parker Platt, interior designer Kathryn Long of Ambiance Interiors, and builder Marc Tyner of Tyner Construction, to help them bring their dream house to life.

“Toni knew the mood she wanted,” Kathryn Long told the magazine. “It was that of the houses built from the 1920s to the 1940s. We came to call it ‘Between the Two Wars.’ She wanted the comfortable feeling of a home that had been there for a long time.”

You can really see the “new vintage” look in the bathrooms with their choice of tile and fixtures.

A pretty playroom with another generous windowseat:

I think this blue bathroom is so pretty with the vintage-inspired black and white tile:

One of my favorite features is the big walk-through pantry. It has a back door that provides easy access to the car for unloading groceries:

Parker Platt says the main goal was to make it a family home: “We focused on Toni, Tom and their kids and how they wanted to live in the house.”

Al Platt adds, “The family took to it like ducks to water. They’ve decorated it enthusiastically and they occupy every inch of it. They use it hard and share it easily. It’s an encouraging house.”

Maybe they won’t mind if I pop over to hang out on their screened porch a bit this summer, then? Love it!
